This very special printing block is the signed work of renown Nova Scotia artist William deGarthe and was used in printing for the Kentville newspaper - The Advertiser - that began in 1878.
It illustrates a typical Nova Scotia coastal scene with spruce trees in a bog near the shore.
William Edward deGarthe (1907–1983) was a Finnish painter and sculptor who lived for much of his life in Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia. Soon after his arrival in Nova Scotia, deGarthe was introduced to Frank Wallace, a prominent Halifax marketing executive who immediately offered him a job as a commercial illustrator. deGarthe launched his own advertising company, deGarthe Advertising Art, in 1945; however, it was the onset of World War II that rekindled his passion for fine art.
Amazing piece for deGarthe collectors or those who love Nova Scotia history, art and artists.
