A wonderful piece of Nova Scotian folk pottery with a wonderfully tactile, old-world presence. This substantial Sherbrooke Pottery jug features a generously rounded, hand-thrown form finished in a deep, lustrous chocolate-brown glaze, complemented by an unusually charming handcrafted wooden stopper.

The jug has all the appealing irregularities one hopes to find in traditionally made pottery—the gentle variations in its form, glaze and surface giving it the unmistakable character of something made by hand rather than mass-produced.

Sherbrooke Village’s pottery program was established in 1979 to recreate the traditional pottery of 19th-century Nova Scotia. Its potters use traditional methods, including a 150-pound kick wheel, and historic pieces were made with locally sourced Nova Scotian clay. The pottery was deliberately rooted in the functional, hardworking wares used in everyday life rather than purely decorative ceramics.

The turned wooden stopper is particularly delightful and adds an unexpected element of craftsmanship, making this more than simply a jug—it is a lovely little meeting of Nova Scotia’s pottery and woodworking traditions.

Perfect displayed on an open shelf, kitchen dresser or farmhouse table, or simply enjoyed as a handsome piece of Canadiana.
