“The Colossus of Roads” is a caricature of Sir George Samuel Jenkinson, 11th Baronet (27 September 1817 – 19 January 1892), a British politician in Vanity Fair, April 1875.
Caricatured by Carlo Pellegrini (1839 – 1889), who did much of his work under the pseudonym of Ape. He served as a caricaturist for Vanity Fair magazine and became its most influential artist.
At the time, the British weekly was the cream of the period’s “society magazines”, and is best known for its witty prose and caricatures of famous people of Victorian and Edwardian society.
This lithograph from Zwicker’s Gallery in Halifax is a lovely example of Pellegrini’s work, Vanity Fair’s style and Jenkinson’s importance in British society.
