A wonderfully atmospheric example of German Art Deco metalwork by Paul Haustein for WMF Ikora, this sculptural covered box is a superb marriage of modernist form and richly developed metallic patina.
The generously rounded, almost pebble-like body is finished in deep forest green, teal and charcoal, with subtle coppery highlights emerging through the surface. The broad, gently domed lid sits like a smooth stone atop the vessel, giving the piece a wonderfully tactile, almost organic presence. The mottled, fire-patinated surface is particularly beautiful, with decades of oxidation creating an entirely individual colouration.
The underside bears the distinctive WMF IKORA Germany impressed mark, confirming its manufacture by the renowned Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) of Geislingen, Germany.
Paul Haustein (1880–1944) was one of the important designers associated with WMF’s modern metalwork. His designs for Ikora helped establish the collection’s distinctive combination of geometric Art Deco/Bauhaus-influenced silhouettes and experimental, richly coloured metal surfaces. Surviving Haustein/Ikora boxes and vessels from the late 1920s - early 30s are particularly sought after by collectors.
