Maxim's located at No. 3 rue Royale in the 8th arrondissement is known for its Art Nouveau interior decor. In the mid 20th century Maxim's was regarded as the most famous restaurant in the world.
The demitasse cups are decorated with iconic images of people who would have frequented the restaurant during the Belle Epoque period ( 1871-1914). They were created by the renowned caricaturist Georges Goursat, known as "SEM" (1863-1934). SEM frequented the famous Parisian restaurant Maxim's at that time and these images are caricatures of the clientele who he saw there.
