A wonderfully stylish piece of mid-century modern design history, this complete Plaza smoking set was designed by legendary French-American industrial designer Raymond Loewy for Rosenthal of Germany. Produced between 1961 and 1964, Plaza is one of Loewy’s most charming collaborations with Rosenthal, translating the glamour of a European city square into an extraordinarily delicate porcelain design.
The softly sketched architectural scene—arched façades, elegant columns, tiny flowering plants, birds and sweeping blue and lavender accents—has an almost Parisian, dreamlike quality, beautifully contrasted against the crisp white porcelain. The design is unmistakably mid-century, yet remarkably fresh and sophisticated.
This substantial 5-piece set includes the large 13-inch porcelain serving platter, two individual ashtrays, a covered cigarette box and a vintage Ronson table lighter, creating a wonderful example of the kind of glamorous entertaining accessories once found on a well-appointed 1960s cocktail table. The lighter adds a particularly wonderful Space Age touch to the ensemble.
Loewy, one of the most influential industrial designers of the 20th century, was responsible for such iconic designs as the Studebaker automobile, Coca-Cola bottle and the interiors and graphics associated with Air Force One. His Plaza pattern remains highly collectible, with complete Rosenthal Plaza services commanding considerably more than individual pieces.
A fabulous collector’s set for the mid-century enthusiast, and equally wonderful displayed as a decorative vignette even in a smoke-free home. The porcelain pieces have an almost architectural-art quality when arranged together.
