Earthy, expressive, and wonderfully sculptural, this vintage Heisler Pottery pitcher has the soulful presence of a piece that feels equally at home in a rustic farmhouse, a coastal cottage, or a carefully curated collection of studio ceramics.
Franklyn Heisler was born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia in 1949, and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and Art Education in 1971 from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. He went on to receive his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Regina in 1978. Heisler became a well respected ceramic artists at the forefront of contemporary ceramic art in Canada in the 1970s and 80s.
Hand-thrown with a generously rounded body, softly flared pouring lip, and substantial sculptural handle, the pitcher is finished in a beautifully organic palette of deep charcoal-brown, mossy green, and creamy natural clay giving the piece a wonderfully spontaneous, almost landscape-like quality.
The underside retains the Heisler pottery mark, while the visible throwing rings and subtle variations in the clay celebrate the hand of the maker. With its substantial form and wonderfully tactile surface, this is a piece that makes a statement whether displayed on open shelving, filled with wildflowers, or used as a distinctive serving pitcher.
