This handcrafted African wire and seed bead giraffe is a superb example of the beadwork folk art tradition that flourished across southern Africa — a craft requiring extraordinary patience and skill, where hundreds of tiny glass seed beads are threaded and wrapped around a wire armature to bring an animal to life in three dimensions.
The body is densely covered in warm amber and olive seed beads that catch the light like old honey, punctuated throughout by vivid accents of cobalt blue, sunshine yellow, red, and pale sky blue — giving the coat an almost impressionistic shimmer up close. The mane runs down the neck in a zig-zag flourish of jet black beads, and even the ossicones (those small knobbed horns) and the wisp of a tail are rendered in faithful detail.
Standing roughly 10” tall, it has real presence on a shelf or mantle. A conversation piece with soul — and a meaningful one at that, rooted in a living craft tradition. In excellent condition.
