The Bluenose was designed by William Roué and built by Smith and Rhuland Shipyard in Lunenburg. The keel was laid in 1920, and the schooner was launched on March 26, 1921.

The Bluenose was designed to be both a racing ship and a fishing vessel, in response to the defeat of a Nova Scotian schooner by an American one in a race sponsored by the Halifax Herald newspaper.

The Bluenose became famous for its speed and racing prowess, winning the International Fishermen's Cup multiple times.

The Bluenose became a symbol of Nova Scotia's prominence in the fishing and shipbuilding industries, representing Canada around the world and earning the title "Queen of the North Atlantic".
