The Châtelet region of Belgium has been renowned for centuries for its ceramics, and indeed since Roman times.
The potters found a good quality clay here, resistant to the high temperature of 1300°C and a supply of sea salt necessary for the vitrification of the pottery.
Willy Biron who made this tobacco jar set up his pottery shop in 1947, following in his father’s footsteps.
A lovely salt-glazed midcentury piece with the word ‘Tabac’ on one side and a lit pipe on the other. Even if you don’t smoke, it can be used as a vase, for writing utensils on a desk or a decorative object.
