A wonderfully rustic piece of early farmhouse, this antique wooden butter press is a beautiful example of the ingenuity and craftsmanship found in traditional rural kitchens.
Entirely handcrafted from wood, the substantial rectangular press consists of a sturdy open-sided frame, a fitted wooden pressing board and a beautifully worn, turned wooden plunger. The construction is wonderfully primitive, with visible hand-cut joinery, old fasteners, irregular edges and the rich, honey-brown patina that develops only through decades of use and handling.
Butter presses such as this were used after churning to press and shape freshly made butter, helping to remove remaining buttermilk while giving the finished butter a neat, substantial form. Butter moulds and presses were also used to create attractive shapes or patterns for presentation at the farmhouse table.
What makes this example particularly appealing is its large, architectural form and honest handmade character. A fabulous addition to a country kitchen, farmhouse, cottage, it would also make an exceptional standalone decorative object.
