A captivating glimpse into the artistry of old Japan, this antique lacquered jewellery cabinet combines elegance, craftsmanship, and everyday practicality in one enchanting piece. Finished in deep black lacquer and delicately adorned with gilt maki-e style traditional Japanese motifs including birds, flowering branches, insects, crabs, and seasonal fruits—symbols of prosperity, longevity, and harmony with nature.

The charming asymmetrical design conceals three exterior drawers and a hinged door which opens to reveal an additional trio of secret interior drawers, each decorated with graceful floral sprays. Ornate metal corner mounts, hinges, and escutcheons lend both strength and decorative appeal, reflecting the Japanese tradition of enhancing lacquerware with finely worked hardware.

Small personal cabinets such as this became highly sought after during the late Meiji period (1868–1912) and early Taishō era (1912–1926), when Japanese decorative arts gained international acclaim through World Expositions and export markets. Inspired by the larger kodansu (merchant chests), these miniature cabinets were often used to store jewellery, correspondence, sewing implements, incense, or treasured keepsakes.

The cabinet displays the gentle wear expected of a well-loved antique, including losses to the lacquer along the base and edges, which only adds to its authentic character and century-old charm. A beautiful statement piece for a dressing table, bookshelf, or curiosity cabinet.
